Calypso Re-power 10.7.2009

Its finally over. We have completed our re-power of the Calypso. I chose the 500hp Yanmars for the job with twin Disc 5075A 2.05:1 boxes. It was a very hard decision between the engines, Cummins and Cats are great engines BUT the idea if being in a remote area with limited resources to fix anything going wrong was very real to me. That is electronics wise The Yanmars are a purely mechanical engine, no electronics and I can fix them myself. The boxes are also true mechanical transmissions. I run ZF Mathers controls for the shifting and throttles. Its been a hard road but after the sea trials yesterday all was worth the effort. 29.5 kts at 2950 rpm which is over revving by 130 so rpm, this will mean more pitch to the props and more speed/bite through the rev range. tests were carried out at full loaded ship weights. never thought i'd see the big girl go so quick. I would also like thank all involved. Danny Frizzel and the team at Go-marine. Greg Pont Marine, Lemon Tree passage marina. Jenny and the guys at Minards Newcastle , Peter Baker Cranes and Muzza my crewman. Andrew Smith from Cummins Newcastle for trying your best, thanks alot. You do your company proud and were more than worthy of the job. Stay tuned for a comprehensive report on the entire re-fit. Look forward to going fishing now TD

Port Stephens marlin Fishing 11.11.2008

Things are starting to come to an end on the reef with the season drawing to a close. We finish our season on the 26th of November after which heading south is the first priority. Fishing from Port Stephens will commence mid December right through to June. We have vacancies for several great times to fish these super productive waters for Black, Striped and Blue Marlin. The season is already underway in Port Stephens with the local club vessels tagging several Striped Marlin. I personally would like to congradulate Captains Laurie Wright and Laurie Woodbridge for there induction into the Cairns Professional Gamefishing Associations Hall of Fame. This will be celebrated on the evening of the 28th of November in Cairns to which all are welcome. Check with Captain Tim for booking arrangements.
