Heavt Tackle Season 2008 25.7.2008

Well winter is on the way out and spring will soon cover the air. Bring on the reef and the big black marlin. The calypso is just about finished its annual maintainance and should hit the water by the second week of August. Recent reports of yellofin tuna off Port Stephens gives hope of a few days tuna fishing before seting off towards far north Queensland for the season. Striped marlin are still at Port Stephens in good numbers with the team on The Force with captain Tim as skipper caught 6 marlin from 6 bites 2 weeks ago. Not bad for the middle of winter. Maybe no-one told the fish. There are still a couple of vacancies for the season including the Townsville Light tackle tournament in the start of September. See you all on the reef.

Fly Fishing for Marlin is FUN! 26.3.2008

The whole of March this year has been dedicated to Marlin on the Fly. We were here in the beginning for the flyfishing gig, and I must say I do enjoy the thrills of it all. The satisfaction an angler gets when the catch the biggest prize of them all on a fly rod is overwhelming. We have averaged teasing 4-5 fish per day for the whole month, and a high of 15 teased to the boat in a day. Catching them is definately the hard bit. Marlin on the fly is not for everyone, but dont knock it because you cant do it or it doesn't suit your simple fishing styles, fishing is about everyday being different. So, make your day different every now and then. I can tell you now that the live baiting deal is the most boring way to fish for a marlin, it turns your fish into a number( as fishing is all about how many NOT how it was done!!) and usually shark shit anyway!!.. Watching rubber bands in pegs all day, you beauty "do you think its a marlin??" If its not a fly rod you want then at least give the bait and switch method a go, watch your catch eat the bait right in front of the crew. Fun for everyone. Suit you line class to the size of the fish as well, try different line classes. I know many boats out there that cant catch any thing unless the Marlin are stacked up on the bait schools eating live baits sunken down on leads, NOW listen up. If you want to win at all costs (which is very important to most) then you SHOULD be trying different tactics and methods, shouldn't you?? Give the crew a different day every now and then, I bet you will feel better for it and don't worry to much if it doesn't go to plan cause you now have a genuine excuse back at the dock if you dont catch the all important numbers. Because you have given something new a go. Remember when you thought circle hooks were no good? Well look now hey! The last two Interclub comps were won on skip baits, wake up dudes!!! Alot of people need to give the fish more respect than just treating them as a number, its not if you win or lose, REMEMBER............................. ITS HOW YOU PLAY THE GAME !
